Legacy of Kalevala: First Update for 2019

I'm going to start posting content via the devlog mechanism, as it's a fine way for people interested in a project to receive updates.

As of now, Legacy is in progress and has been for the last two years.  It's been slow going for me because within those two years a lot has happened to me -- and since I am a single developer, it has taken away much of my time from this project.  But things are now changing;  I am working on Legacy full-time now and have made quite a lot of progress in the last month and a half.

What is Legacy Going To Be?

Legacy will be a complete re-make of the original 2012 Flash game entitled "Legend of Kalevala."  All the new features have yet to entirely nailed down, but I am intending the game to not just be a 1:1 rebuild of the original, nor a HD remaster.

It will be a stand-alone game that you download and install on your computer.  Current platforms include Windows 64-bit, and Linux 64-bit, with more possible.

In effect, Legacy will be "Legend of Kalevala II" mixed with the content from the original Flash version of Legend.  This is a continuation of my work that I started a year or so after Legend was completed, but never finished due to changes in my life.   (To note: Nothing bad, I just became super-busy working in the game industry and other software professions.)

I've always envisioned the Kalevala game series to be a trilogy.   So Legacy will be the second entry in this series, and continue the story from Legend -- but will also contain the original Legend content, remade.

The artwork will remain mostly the same but there will be much more expanded visuals.  For example of some of the things implemented: Real time lighting effects, new underground cave sounds, post-processing lighting, more animated levels, and more world-building in general (ambient sound effects, day/night cycle, etc).

The levels from the Flash game will be present, though some areas will be vastly rebuilt in order to fit the more expanded scope of Legacy.

What is going to change?

I'm still experimenting with game play related modifications, but I guarantee that the Kurii will handle much more smoothly and organically.  The in-progress version has already received glowing praise from its testers for how natural it feels to control the main character, and the significantly increased frame rate (due to running outside of Flash) increases the overall fidelity.

For those who enjoy collecting secrets/finding all the hidden segments, you will be happy to know that I am remixing all of this for Legacy.

Unlike Legend, power ups will no longer be a collect-and-use-instantly system but instead will rely upon the player to make decisions on best when and how to use certain abilities.  More on this in further updates!

Level interactivity has been greatly expanded.  Most puzzles in Legend were a case of "go here, flip a switch."  But in Legacy, you will have to decode the mysteries of Kalevala in order to achieve your goals.  Everything on Kalevala wants to kill you;  Learn to co-opt the ancient machinery in order to stay alive and succeed.

The world is now seamless.  There are no loading transitions between areas, which allows you to run free everywhere.  Some areas will still be split between doors (with possible loading) but this will be an exception and not the norm.  However, each area will still have its own theme and story-telling aspects, as seen in the Flash version.

There will be an entirely new game mode, but again more on this later!

What Should I Expect?

First of all, Legacy will not be a free game, as was Legend.  If you are familiar with my games, you might know that I release most of them free without charge.  But in the case of Legacy I want to work on my games full time and now I am in a position in my life where I have the ability to do so.  By purchasing Legacy you will be enabling me to continue on future games, and the final third game in the series (entitled, Guardian of Kalevala).  I am able to devote my life to working on Legend.

At the moment, there will be updates posted here but access to the game will not be available until it's finished and for sale.

I might consider a more open development cycle where you could directly support me and the creation of Legacy -- such as being Patreon supporter -- if enough interest is shown in that.

When Will It Be Done?

I don't want to Value this and say "when it's done" but I do have an aggressive development cycle which leads to a tentative release date of February 2020.  Legacy might not be available until the end of February, however, due to publishing process waiting time.

Where will Legacy be sold?  That is still to be determined, but expect it to be through at least one digital download service.

Will The Original Music Be Used Again?

Likely, though the engine I am developing the game in (Godot) does not support the music format which Legend used.  I will need to discuss this with the original composer of Legend and see what he wants to do.

Hi! I loved Legend of Kalevala back when it was new, and was always disappointed I never saw the expansions. It might take me a bit to get the game once it is out, but i'm already looking forward to it.
